E-nos: The Pump that Invigorates
In bodybuilding circles, the training “pump” is a term that has been used for decades. Arnold Schwarzenegger popularized it in the movie Pumping Iron when he was quoted as saying, “The greatest feeling you can get in a gym or the most satisfying feeling you can get in a gym is the pump. Let’s say you’re training biceps. Blood is rushing into your muscles, and that’s what we call the pump. Your muscles get a really tight feeling like your skin is going to explode any minute. It’s really tight, it’s like somebody blowing air into your muscle. It just blows up and it feels different. It feels fantastic.”
If training for the pump is something you’re after, E-nos should be your closest ally. The medicinal ingredients in E-nos work synergistically to aid blood flow to the working muscle, buffer lactic acid accumulation and reduce your perception of pain, allowing you to train harder and longer, and experience a pump like never before.
Citrulline, one of the ingredients in E-nos, is a non-essential amino acid that increases nitric oxide (NO) production and aids in the reduction of lactic acid and ammonia (NH3) buildup via the urea cycle. This delays the decrease in your muscle pH, which will also decrease your muscle fatigue and increase ATP for energy and recovery. More importantly, citrulline can change into arginine, which can turn into extra nitric oxide (via nitric oxide synthase enzymes) and a more massive pump.
There has been some debate over whether L-citrulline is a better alternative to citrulline malate. There is more pure citrulline in L-citrulline, and this may lead to increased ergogenic results. But, the citrulline in citrulline malate is bonded to malic acid to increase its stability and absorption. Since both citrulline and malic acid are active in the TCA cycle, they may provide synergistic results if taken together. And, while citrulline possesses its own fatigue‑fighting properties, malic acid has earned a reputation as a powerful fatigue warrior due to its process of recycling the body’s lactic acid and reusing it as energy within cells’ mitochondria. Citrulline malate is the form used in E-nos.
Agmatine sulfate, another active ingredient in E-nos, has been touted as a neurotransmitter and is stored in neurons and released during activation and muscular contraction. What this means in relation to training is that you’ll see an increase in training drive, focus and acuity due to its nootropic effects on the brain.
Perhaps the most promising benefit agmatine has to offer in relation to the pump is that it’s a derivative of arginine and inhibits nitric oxide enzymes, keeping nitric oxide levels elevated in the blood and improving vasodilation and nutrient uptake in the muscle. Additionally, it has been shown to increase your perception of pain, allowing you to train harder for longer with minimal drop-off in performance.
The final fatigue-busting amino acid in the E-nos trio is beta-alanine. Beta-alanine turns into carnosine, another lactic acid buffering compound, assisting us when muscle pH levels in our blood drop, which can be the case during high-intensity exercise. A decease in pH levels can be a significant contributor to muscle weakness.
In summary, the combination of citrulline malate, agmatine sulfate and beta-alanine in ATP’s E‑nos helps counter muscle fatigue, increase muscle pump and athletic performance (by first converting to arginine, then to nitric oxide), facilitate post-workout recovery, boost the immune system, improve insulin sensitivity and increase production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and human growth hormone (HGH). If your training goal is to build muscle mass through hypertrophic training methods, like Arnold in the good ol’ days, adding E-nos to your pre‑workout arsenal will be the best investment you’ve ever made.
Stay Healthy, Stay Strong, Enjoy the benefits of the pump.
