ABOUT THE ATHLETE

Justine Salette is a 21-year-old woman from the Montreal (Canada) region. She studies communications at the University of Montreal. She began training and nutrition to overcome her eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia. She has been training at the gym since the age of fifteen when she seriously started developing her social media presence as well as her own small training business catered to women. She is now training for her personal well-being, to feel strong and she hopes to inspire other women on their journey. Her passions and hobbies include acting, boxing, running, cheerleading and yoga!

Justine: Fire Cracker!

When did you start your career as an elite athlete?
Justine: I started at 15! I was in a World Cheerleading team called the Flyers All-Starz at the time and I decided to dedicate myself seriously into training to feel good and to inspire thousands of young women like me!

If you could choose another career or sport what would it be?
Justine: There are so many things I want to do in my life... that's why I do not put any barriers. I'm doing a lot of it right now, and that's why I would not want to do anything other than what I'm doing now!

What or who made you want to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle?
Justine: My loss of control during the time I had eating disorders has really disrupted my life. I knew I had to get back on my feet, and since my body is very important to me, I figured I could take back control in an active and healthy way.

WHEN IT COMES TO OUR PROTEIN SUPPLEMENT FLAVOURS, WHICH ONE DO YOU PREFER?

Vanilla, Chocolate, Raspberry or Salted Caramel?

Justine: Since I'm a vegan, I only use OVB, which has chocolate and vanilla. I love both, but I find vanilla more versatile for recipes!

What is your position on the use of illegal or uncontrolled drugs in certain sports such as the fitness world?
Justine: This is one of the reasons why I decided to stop fitness competitions. I have been a natural athlete all my life, and I have had a lot of trouble achieving a condition comparable to competitors using performance-enhancing drugs (the vast majority). I am VERY competitive, so it affected me a lot. I believe that even though the aesthetical may be important for many people, the training should aim the well being of the ENTIRE body: health, happiness and a balanced life. The use of drugs is the complete opposite in my opinion!

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Justine: I will be very "corny" and say nothing. Yes, growing up I often asked myself that question and the list was endless. But I am so proud of the person that I am internally that I realized all these battles did really worth it: they made me the person I am today. But if I had a magic wand I could maybe improve my immune system because I've been sick a lot for two years, which is abnormal.

Justine: Muhammad Ali

Justine: The moment you know that it is time to show the fruit of all your actions, when it’s time to shine, when you see the result of ALL your efforts and you give your maximum, with a smile, having fun... I LOVE being on stage, the people, the momentum!

Justine: Hall of Fame - The Script

IF YOU HAD SUPERPOWERS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHAT WOULD BE YOUR SUPERHERO NAME?
Justine: It would be the power to make each person loved unconditionally: by their peers, life and themselves. Supposedly living in pure love by having the best possible version of your life. My hero name? Good question... probably simply Justine LOVE!

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE OR FAVORITE CHEAT MEAL?
Justine: I never cheat, I always eat food that I know will bring me positivity, regardless of whether it’s to feed me or make me happy. My treats are always vegan, often organic, and I eat my fill with no excess to feel good!

My favorite treats are:

- Vegan ice cream

- Cookies, vegan brownies

- Vegan pasta

- Big salads filled with healthy ingredients: I just love it!

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH GOALS FOR THIS YEAR?
Justine: To get sick less often, to increase my energy levels, to increase my cardio by running more often, to be less anxious and to lose some weight for my personal satisfaction.

Do you believe that women are well represented in the sports and fitness industries?
Justine: It depends. The world of "Fitness" is broad. But in the fitness industry where the focus is put on competitors only... No, I do not think so. I really believe in the saying to live and let live, to celebrate your own body and being proud of it. But in this environment, I find that there are many things that are shady, people perform for the wrong reasons...

But hey! In terms of the general sports industry, I think that women are taking their place more and more and that's a good thing. To love oneself, do what sets your soul on fire, to be happy - that's the most important thing. And not what people think of you.

We love your beautiful smile, so tell us what or who makes you smile everyday?
Justine: Hahaha! Thank you! In fact, I have a tic since I was little... I often smile when I concentrate, when I think or when I'm anxious! But I am generally a very positive person and I believe that a smile can really change the course of a day. It takes only two seconds, it's free and it's contagious!

You describe yourself as a “Fire breather & self-love preacher” what do you mean by that?
Justine: The “Fire breather" name describes my intensity, my motivation for life in general. I am told to be very intense, ambitious, and I am ready for ANYTHING to succeed in the field that I love. I breathe fire on a daily basis! "Self love preacher", well, it's just that I feel my mission in life is to make people fall in love with themselves. I once lived in fear, dissatisfaction with myself and hatred to the point where I completely prevented myself from living. I have now hatched into a proud person, living for me, owning my choices and this feeling is priceless. I wish there was not a single person who lived with these degrading feelings towards themselves. Life is too short.

IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FANS WHO SEEK A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?

Justine: Do it for you, do it for the right reasons. Before any action: find your “WHY”. Put good intentions. This may seem trivial at first, but any success starts from the mind. And if the mind is not in the right place... the results won’t follow, and you will not be authentically happy. Believe in yourself, love yourself, you are worth it!
