Where Do You Carry Most of Your Body Fat? A Simple Guide

You can change the shape of your body, but not necessarily the size of your body. In other words, you may lose fat in a specific region while your overall body fat doesn't decrease as much as you'd like.

Conversely, you can change the size of your body, but not necessarily the shape. In other words, you may lose a significant amount of weight yet still notice that a particular region stores more fat than the rest of your body.

This is largely influenced by hormones, including—but not limited to—testosterone, estrogen, growth hormone, insulin, and cortisol.

Understanding your body's tendencies can help you better address both size and shape. Of course, this must be combined with proper training, nutrition, and lifestyle habits for the best results.

Let's look at two common examples.

Example 1: Fat Around the Midsection

For men, excess fat around the midsection is often associated with low testosterone, high cortisol, and elevated insulin levels.

Testosterone helps mobilize fat so that it can be used for energy rather than stored. When testosterone levels are low, fat is more likely to accumulate in what is often considered the default storage region for men: the abdomen. Meanwhile, elevated cortisol and insulin can further promote fat storage in this area.

For women, excess fat around the midsection is also commonly associated with elevated cortisol and insulin levels. See Example 2 for contrast.

Example 2: Fat Concentrated in the Legs

For men, excess fat accumulation in the hips, glutes, and legs may be associated with elevated estrogen levels, whether from endogenous production and/or exposure to environmental estrogens. Estrogen receptors are highly concentrated in these regions, which may influence where fat is preferentially stored.

For women, the picture is quite different. Fat stored in the glutes, hips, and thighs is generally associated with a healthy metabolic profile and healthy sex hormone status. However, as always, the dose matters. If fat accumulation in these regions becomes excessive, elevated estrogen levels may be one contributing factor.
